Mickey Avalon: 20 Year Anniversary Playing the Complete First Album!
Mickey Avalon’s life reads like VH1’s Behind the Music: marked by tragedy, triumph and pain. Raised on the streets of Hollywood by a heroin-addicted father, he began selling pot young, taught by his mother. In his late teens he converted to Orthodox Judaism to clean up, but family tragedy—his father’s death in a drunk-driving crash—undermined it.
By his early 20s he’d married, had a daughter, and moved to Portland, Oregon, but his Hollywood drug life caught up with him: an uncontrollable heroin addiction left him broke, divorced, and prostituting to support the habit. He moved in with his sister to recover; she later relapsed and died of a heroin overdose.
After losing his father and sister, Avalon returned to Los Angeles determined to get clean. Ex-MTV VJ Simon Rex (Dirt Nasty) befriended him, encouraged his hip-hop pursuits, and distributed Mickey’s demos while Avalon stayed in sober living. He built a following in the L.A. club scene; Interscope signed him in 2005.
Through Interscope he released his self-titled debut, showcasing raw, street-informed lyrics. Tracks like “Jane Fonda,” “Mr. Right” and “My Dick” spread online and on radio, making him widely known. He sold out clubs, toured with acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snoop Dogg, collaborated on a Boost Mobile spot with Young Jeezy and Jermaine Dupri, co-wrote Unwritten Law’s “Shoulda Known Better,” and has had music placed in films, TV and games.
